UPDATE: I am now an in-network provider for Optum/United Healthcare. Please contact your insurance company prior to scheduling to confirm that your specific plan covers mental health counseling with me.
I acknowledge that utilizing insurance can make counseling more accessible, which is why I have chosen to become an in-network provider with Optum/United Healthcare. However, there are multiple reasons why I have limited it to one insurance company at this time, which include the following:
1. Insurance companies require that I provide them with a diagnosis and determine medical necessity. There are multiple situations in which counseling can be beneficial (and even needed) without meeting criteria for a specific mental health diagnosis.
2. Reimbursement rates from insurance companies are significantly lower than the typical out-of-pocket rate for counseling. By accepting these rates from multiple insurance companies, I would need to maintain a much higher caseload, which would limit my ability to provide individualized and effective treatment.
3. Tracking down and reconciling insurance claims and payments requires a great deal of time. In addition, it is not uncommon for insurance companies to deny claims after-the-fact (months to years later), putting you in a position of being financially responsible for past sessions that had originally been covered.
That being said, if you have insurance through a company other than Optum/United Healthcare, you are welcome to file for out-of-network benefits with your insurance company. If you choose to do so, you are still responsible for paying the normal, out-of-pocket rate on the date of your session. I will then provide you with the necessary documentation of services received and receipt of payment for you to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
